About the Author

Joseph A. DeVito received a BA from Hunter College in 1960 (with a major in speech and a minor in Spanish), an MA from Temple University in 1962 (with a major in speech along with some sociology), and a PhD from the University of Illinois in 1964 (with a major in speech and a minor in linguistics). After receiving his PhD, DeVito returned to his alma mater, Hunter College-in-the-Bronx [which later became Lehman College], to teach. Later, he moved to Queens College and then to Hunter (from which he retired from full-time teaching)—all within the City University of New York. During his teaching career, DeVito taught a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate courses, with a concentration on the undergraduate level and mainly on the introductory courses.

 

At various times, DeVito has served on the editorial boards of Quarterly Journal of Speech, Communication Monographs, Communication Education, Communication Quarterly, Journal of Communication, and Etc: A Review of General Semantics. He has also served as consulting editor to publishers: Random House, Harper & Row, Waveland Press, and HarperCollins. He also served as ETS coordinator of the committee to construct the DANTES Public Speaking Test for the Educational Testing Service. A prolific author, DeVito has written or edited more than 20 books in the field of communication, including The Interpersonal Communication Book, Human Communication: The Basic Course, and Essentials of Human Communication, all published by Pearson.

About the Author
Jerald L. Rounds, PhD, PE, is Associated General Contractors Endowed Chair in Construction Management and Construction Engineering at the University of New Mexico. As a certified Class "A" construction superintendent in Denver, he served as project manager on a number of commercial building projects prior to more than thirty years as a construction educator. Concurrently, he has developed numerous training programs in project management and supervision for the construction industry. Most recently, he codeveloped the NECA Electrical Project Supervision training program with Robert Segner, with whom he has conducted "train the trainer" sessions for the past decade.

Robert O. Segner Jr. is a professor of construction science in the College of Architecture at Texas A&M University. He followed years of construction practice with four decades in construction higher education. He has served as president of the American Council for Construction Education. Segner codeveloped the NECA Electrical Project Supervision training program with Jerald Rounds and has conducted "train the trainer" sessions for the past decade. He has developed and taught numerous other continuing education programs.

I purchased both the Kindle and Audio versions. Very informative and helpful if you are looking to start your own podcast.The book is not just a pep talk about the benefits of podcasting or a beginner's guide. Stephen goes into great detail describing equipment, software, recording techniques and marketing. The audio book is easy listening but a printed copy, or at minimum a kindle version is advised if you wish to see samples and charts.

So this book is more about how to make a podcast to serve your business, instead of creating an independent creative project out of one - I was willing to accept that that just doesn't apply to me and go on my merry way. I was about to say this book was fine but the second to last chapter, about how to "recruit rockstar unpaid interns" ground my gears way too much for me to compliment this book or its author. Basically, he says you need to hire college seniors because they are the most "motivated" (a nice word for desperate, I guess) for experience and will be willing to put in extra time (because, screw the parts of their lives they use to actually make money so that they can make rent). He says you should push interns as hard as paid employees, because why not take full advantage of free labor given to you by a cursed market where desperate, broke students are forced to work unpaid in order to claw their way to a (under)paid job while struggling to get by on the inflated cost of living and pay off student loans. Horrible, horrible mentality - lost my respect for the author with this.

This book is not just about podcasting, it's a business road map for growing any business. I love the first 7 chapters of this book that talk about what is most important to growing your business. Before jumping in with the tactical recipe for creating a podcast Stephen lays the groundwork to set you up for success. I love the business case studies that prove this model works. Worth the investment! A must read!
