About the Author

Rebekah H. Pindzola, Professor Emeritus, has served the clinical and academic professions in numerous capacities. At Auburn University she rose through the ranks of assistant, associate, and full professor and provided administrative leadership as Chair of the Department of Communication Disorder, Director of the AU Speech and Hearing Clinic as well as to the College of Liberal Arts as Associate Dean and Interim Dean. She has coauthored popular clinical books and intervention materials. Now in its Ninth Edition, this Diagnosis and Evaluation in Speech Pathology has been a widely adopted text in the field of speech-language pathology both in the United States and Korea. Her co-authored book, Communication Disorders in Educational and Medical Settings (2012, Jones & Bartlett Learning), also was translated internationally. Dr. Pindzola authored two clinical monographs over the years: Voice Assessment Protocol (1987, Pro-Ed) and Stuttering Intervention Program Age 3 to Grade 3 (out o print). She also ha published numerous research articles, contributed book chapters, and presented professional papers in the areas of fluency, stuttering, alaryngeal speech following cancer, and voice disorders. Over her career, she has taught undergraduate- and graduate-level courses in these areas as well as in anatomy/physiology and the neuropathologies. Dr. Pindzola received her Ph.D. in Speech and Hearing Sciences from the University of Tennessee.

 

Dr. Laura Plexico is an Associate Professor and certified Speech-Language Pathologist who specializes in the area of fluency disorders and speech acoustics. She currently lives in auburn Alabama and teaches undergraduate and graduate courses and provides clinical services in the Department of Communication Disorders at Auburn University. She teaches courses in fluency, speech science, counseling and clinical problem solving. Dr. Plexico’s research interests include understanding the cognitive and affective consequences of stuttering, factors that influence successful stuttering management, and factors that influence the acoustic assessment of the voice. She has received NIH grant funding, published in the area of fluency and voice disorders and has presented at regional, national and international meetings. Dr. Plexico serves as an external reviewer of manuscripts for professional journals and is actively involved in professional organizations.

 

William O. Haynes, Ph.D., earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Northern Michigan University in Speech-Language Pathology and completed his doctoral degree in communication disorders at Bowing Green State University. Dr. Haynes taught at Auburn University (AL) in the Department of Communication Disorders for 33 years serving two terms as department chairperson. His areas of expertise are child/adolescent language development and disorders, diagnosis of communication disorders and research methods. He has been involved with the text, Diagnosis and Evaluation in Speech Pathology since its second edition in 1973 and has incorporated significant changes seen in the field of communication disorders in each edition since that tie. He has published several other major textbooks including Communication Disorders in Medical and Educational Settings: An Introduction for Speech-Language Pathologists, Teachers and Health Professionals (Haynes, W.O., Moran, J.J. and Pindzola, R. H., Jones and Bartlett, 2012), Professional Communication in Speech-Language Pathology: How to Write, Talk and Act Like a Clinician (Burrus, A.E. and Haynes, W.O., Plural Publications, 2009), Understanding Research and Evidence-Based Practice in Communication Disorders (Haynes, W.O. and Johnson, C., Allyn & Bacon, 2009), Communication Disorders in the Classroom (Haynes, W.O. Moran, M.J., and Pindzla, R.H., 4/e, Jones and Bartlett, 2006) and Communication Development: Foundations, Processes and Clinical Applications (Haynes, W.O. and Shulman, B.B., 2/e, Williams and Wilkins, 1998). He has also published over 50 research articles in national and international journals. Dr. Haynes holds the rank of Professor Emeritus at Auburn University.

About the Author
Jackson J. Spielvogel is Associate Professor Emeritus of History at The Pennsylvania State University. He received his Ph.D. from The Ohio State University, where he specialized in Reformation history under Harold J. Grimm. His articles and reviews have appeared in journals such as Moreana, Journal of General Education, Catholic Historical Review, Archiv für Reformationsgeschichte, and American Historical Review. He also has contributed chapters or articles to THE SOCIAL HISTORY OF THE REFORMATION, THE HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE: A DICTIONARY HANDBOOK, the SIMON WIESENTHAL CENTER ANNUAL OF HOLOCAUST STUDIES, and UTOPIAN STUDIES. His work has been supported by fellowships from the Fulbright Foundation and the Foundation for Reformation Research. At Penn State, he helped inaugurate the Western Civilization course, as well as a popular course on Nazi Germany. His book HITLER AND NAZI GERMANY was published in 1987 (7th Edition, 2014). He is the author of WESTERN CIVILIZATION, first published in 1991 (9th Edition, 2015), and the coauthor (with William Duiker) of WORLD HISTORY, first published in 1994 (8th Edition, 2016). I liked the first part of the book as the author described how he entered medicine and his internship at Cook County filled with idealism only to be faced with the reality of patient care and poor to no support from the medical staff. See one, do one, teach one is a reality in medical education even today. He goes into great detail about his political involvement as a resident and the functioning of the hospital which I found boring. I would have enjoyed the book more if he had told more about the people that he worked with, both patients and staff.

This is another look at a grand institution. I had some great opportunities in my early training years to shadow in the Trauma Unit. I was quickly made aware that it wasn't the "HI TECH" equipment (there was none), it was the practitioners who manned the room that made the unit so great. I also got a taste, as a paramedic, of the ED when I again, did clinical rotations many many years ago....I never experienced the 300+ patients waiting for care and getting the best.... I added this to my previous read HOSPITAL which looked at CCH as well.

Dr. David Ansell has written a compelling autobiographical inside look of his own personal journey in becoming a doctor at Cook County hospital. If you have ever been an intern or resident physician or even better, residency in Chicago, you will find some eerie similarities to your own experience. His experience actually led to some important health policy changes in America where patient dumping in emergency rooms has been banned. His 17 years of frontline work in Chicago's public hospital also saw the transition from the old hospital to a new hospital. More importantly, he illustrates from a physician/patient perspective how our current health care financing system has failed us and why we need a single payer, national health insurance plan for this country. For those interested in health policy, but from a personal real life perspective, this is the book for you.

Excellent book well written and factual. Any one from Chicago and the medical field will really enjoy this book.

Excellent account of daily life at Cook County Hospital and the efforts by house staff to improve medical care for its patients. This account documents the period of time after my time there 1963-64 when house staff simply tried to endure the daily grind of taking care of an unending stream of patients. My hat is off to those who also found time to successfully advocate for their patients.

Loved this book...could not put it down.... especially since I worked there in the mid 1960's..RN in Women and Men's admitting.

David Ansell tells his experiences of working as an intern and physician with Cook County Medical Center. Told with candor and an activist's zeal, Ansell's story gives an enlightening look into the challenges of offering quality medical care in the final quarter of the 20th century at Cook County. Working in what is comparable to third world conditions, Ansell tells of the challenge he faced as a young doctor trying to make a difference in the life and health of his patients at County. Though this book reads like a memoir, it also contains a history of the medical and political developments that occurred in the latter 20th century and their impact on lives of the poor in Chicago and Cook County. While a bit uneven in quality of writing, Ansell's story is engaging and challenging to anyone concerned about health and well being of the poor.

Currently entering my third year of medical School. Dr. Ansell's book is a shining example of a life of boots on the ground medicine and activism.I highly recommend this book to any medical student especially people in Chicago. There is a lot of history in here about the County Hospital.

Good reference and I would have given the kindle edition 5 stars but the fonts used spell the flat musical notes wrong. For example when in the text he mentions an Ab (meaning A “flat” of course) it spells AE, or a Bb is spelt BE. So every ‘b” meaning a Flat on a note is spelt with an “E” not a b.You can figure out what he means by cross referencing, but come on Berkelee and Kindle, get it together and fix it!Look in the table of contents for example: An BE Tenor Saxophone, or a EE Alto Sax and BE Trumpet? Those are easy to figure out but the book is riddled with E’s instead of b’s for flats in the text which are hard on the eyes when reading and is very amateurish for such a book.

The continued development of arranging techniques available through this text in combination with another Berklee Press book" Modern Jazz Voicings written by Ted Pease and Ken Pullig have boosted my writing options and elevated my practice writing for professional performance.The knowlege has even helped my writing for the theater.

The Go-Go's lead singer who went on to a solo career recounts a remarkable early Cinderella story that morphs into a frank, though at times self-indulgent, story of drug abuse and failure. Hailing from a working-class section of Los Angeles, the eldest daughter of divorced parents, Carlisle struggled early on with shame over her mother's depression and her step-father's drinking problem; teased for her chubbiness, she sought escape from a difficult home and found it in the mid-'70s' burgeoning L.A. punk scene. Steeped in the brash music of Iggy Pop and Queen, crazy about the iconoclastic new look, she and her friends haunted Hollywood clubs while she worked as a hairdresser and secretary. In 1978 she, Jane Wiedlin, and Margot Olaverra came up with the idea of starting their own band, eventually adding Charlotte Caffey and Gina Shock, and within a short time the all-girl Go-Go's had moved from being a novelty to a super-cool pop band with their dance hit, We Got the Beat. Alongside dizzying stardom came the requisite drug-and-alcohol frenzy, and much of this memoir is a chronicle of one party after another and a list of celebrity who's who. Erstwhile Go-Go and distaff rock-music icon Carlisle delivers the goods on her battles with substance abuse and life on the road in the band that was a somewhat more organic version of the Runaways. The Go-Go's were the first all-female band to attain a number-one sales ranking with an album of original material played by the band. Although Carlisle's subsequent solo career has now overshadowed her Go-Go's days, at least artistically if not in the public consciousness, much of the fun here is centered on the wild and crazy partying on the road during the Go-Go's commercial ascendance. Social interactions and psychic adventuring with bands such as the Police provide the behind-the-scenes fodder that rock fans love in their stars' memoirs, and the fact that Carlisle also interacted professionally with the likes of Don Henley of the Eagles adds to her recollections.
