First off....this read is so modern day and very relative to a great number of families/people today. I love how realistically descriptive the writer is. It's totally opposite of what I initially thought. Although an easy read, it was compelling and convicting both in the same. So much so, that I was left with an unusual appetite of wanting more. At times I felt as though I was right there in the car and room with them. I had several moments where I just could not be pulled away because I was anxious about the next moment. I so want the full novel!!

This is one of those kinds of stories that, due to great professional narration, I want to give it a positive rating. But, I just can't.Bear with me...this is the third or fourth in the Dark Corners collection that I have read and posted a review for. Among them, this is, for me, the dud. Why?The writer spends far too much time building the two characters. The husband is a socially conscious liberal proud black man. His wife is much the opposite. Their young son is more attuned to Mom. Anyway, divulging more would spoil the story, so I shan't do that.After the overlong intro, though, despite a couple of contradictions among the two main characters, the writing picks up and kept me hanging on the every word. Most of the people feel real and, except for the far too nice cop, are believable and true to type, as described by this writer.BLUSH FACTOR: The number of profanities, including f-words, will probably cause blushing if you are reading it to your church prayer group. By all means, if you're not bothered by cussing, you might enjoy this story. As I said, once I got passed the opening few pages, I was not bothered by the language. The 'n-word' is used, but it is the thinking of the main character, so, keep that in mind.SOUL: Yes, this is a story with soul.BOTTOM LINEThree stars out of five. The action sequence and the conflict descriptions almost make this a four star read.Hope my short review helps you decide, one way or the other. I don't mean to be overly critical, as this is not a bad story and it is not bad writing. A brief and beautifully told tale of strange modern mysticism, The Tangled Woods is, at once, a glimpse at casual violence and masculine toxicity, a true story about magic, and a thoughtful contemplation on human connection, family, love.As a forewarning: I did not realize this story was part of a larger collection, I caught it on its lonesome on recommendation. My review is not written within the context of the Dark Corners collection entire.I will also say that I've read some reviews citing political bent or didacticism but found little merit to the charge, myself. The story deals with understandable fears from understandable perspectives, and though many of those fears have political attachments, the exploration of these fears through perspective isn't wildly political, nor is the text didactic.Now, the review proper.Perspective is everything. Pause on that.Reginald Wright is a cynical, rotted-out man, and every page, every paragraph of this story serves as partial dissection of his husk. His perspective, and the reader's, infects every moment. And as we are met so quickly, and frequently, with the foibles and casual bitterness of the narrator, we are brought to question him, and, when we see as he sees, ourselves. Time visits cruelty upon everyone, and roughs us into scar tissue and callus. The world's cruelty isn't at all evenly distributed, but everyone is familiar with it. Reginald crackles with the many-asked question, "What have we become in our scarification?"Reginald is a disappointed, unsatisfied, hungry man in the midst of a tragically typical mid-life crisis. There but for the grace of God go I...The backdrop to the plot is the Poconos, and a near-stereotypical lodging thereat. At the Big Bear Lodge there's a spa, and a campus-wide immersive kiddie-LARP called Wizard World, and everyone there is the same as everyone else there and it is terrifying. Raboteau excellently captures the real horror of such environs, the grotesque deformity of the animatronic, the noise of so many other families, the crushing blandness of it all. And yet, and yet...this place is magickal. (WITH A K!)Reginald finds a foil in the character of Sean, a different, more deranged breed of toxic masculinity and scarification. Their differences are stark, yes, of course, but their similarities set up one of the key scenes of the story. They twine together in a bond of poison, brokenness; their interaction becomes totemic, a parable of venomous masculinity, of violence lurking just beneath barely-there civility. It unfolds the only way it could be expected to unfold, really. With unexpected consequence. Their meeting is a moment of division, but also strange synchronicity. Perhaps Jungian synchronicity. Mystic synchronicity.Speaking of mysticism, of course, Wizard World is the main Big Bear Lodge activity. It's a sprawling game of Potter-esque wizardry, except, predictably, significant parts of it are malfunctioning or broken. Reginald is predictably embittered by these further developments, but the magician of the family, young Thurgood, continues relentlessly on his quest. Thurgood wants to reach the end of this ritual so that he might acquire the healing rune and, well...repair some of his father's bitterness and trauma. These kinds of grand quests are often the heroic fantasies of children, but, alas, this one seems unlikely to succeed. So much of the game doesn't work that it looks as if finding even the cheap plastic version of the 'healing rune' may be impossible.Except...Well. You would have to read it, I suppose.Because, again...perspective is everything. And though the story is rooted in Reginald's perspective by prose, Raboteau simultaneously suggests the perspective of every character. And sometimes, what we see is just what we see, but sometimes what we see becomes real. I'd like to write more, but I'd hate to spoil anything.All of this happens in the States, with fears that correspond to many people's fears, and realities that are difficult to confess to. This story could easily have driven into some heavy truths, and driven deeply, but these U.S. realities largely remain background noise, setting. They inform the story but they do not define it. This story may be 'political' in that politics constantly necessarily exerts its will over its citizenship at all times, quite unevenly, and therefore the events and realities of the book reflect that...but otherwise I would not label it so.This is a fascinating read, at times quite funny, at times tragic, and crackling with a special sort of magic. And you can finish it in a day!

I thought this would be a great little read, but I didn't like it at all. None of the characters were fleshed out enough to care about, the story was boring. I kept waiting for something to happen to make it more engaging, but it just ends with a depressing act by one of the minor characters. I wish I'd read something else.

I really enjoyed this short story from Emily Raboteau. It is well worth the read, particularly around Halloween. A cautionary tale, indeed.

This is really gorgeous writing! Topical subject matter makes the story all the more interesting. It’s a delightful quick read that will hold your interest and end all too soon.

Within two pages we are already introduced to a black family that thinks it needs protection to safely drive through "Trump country" Pennsylvania, a bad Trump supporting driver in gas guzzler truck that cuts them off, a child who asks if the white police are going to shoot daddy when he gets pulled over, and a school shooting on the radio news, because "what has this country come to?". If you like msnbc, safe spaces, race baiting, and cliche, then this is the book for you. But not for me, I'm done on page two, and I'd like my 90 seconds back please. Thank you.

Even though Singleton's companion book "Film Scheduling" is essential to learn how to breakdown a script and "Film Budgeting" might have seamlessly taken me step by step from schedule to budget. "Film and Video Budget 4th edition" contains the most up-to-date information (it was published in 2006), presents five different types of sample budgets that range from a 5 million dollar feature, to music video to a no-budget digital feature and they can be downloaded as Excel sheets, which you can use for the projects that more closely resemble each scenario.As if all this wasn't enough it provides useful resources for all steps of the production process and money saving tips for shoestring budgets. This is a must for independent producers starting out in the industry or producing different type or more complex shows than before.

For instance there is a short paragraph on feeding your cast and crew. It says, 'On low-budget shows, if you don't have enough people to warrant hiring a caterer, pass around the menu from a good local restaurant. Or, if it's tighter than that, say for a student film, order in a pizza.'Then there are the budgets. It starts with a budget for a $5 Million Feature Film project. It lists seventeen pages of budget items that include just about everything you can think of to include in a budget. From there it goes down to a $12,000 sample budget for a student film.These budgets are discussed here with explanations of what goes into each line item. Then the budgets themselves are available for down loading in Excel format. You can take in the budget and then modify it as needed to fit your own needs. Just the sample budgets are enough to make this book worthwhile, if they keep you from forgetting some critical item it could make the difference in getting the production done or not. The explanations of the line items in the budget clearly describe what each of these mean and how they might fit into your project.The book clearly shows that these people have been working on budgeting for such productions for a long time. They simply have the ring of 'been there, done that.'

I must throw in my two cents here. Unlike many of the readers I find the relentless facts thrown out to be quite interesting. The way the author documents what is known about Holmes is excellent. I also agree with those who find his arrangement of these facts to be rather dry but at the same time I find them fascinating. One thing that does throw me, though, is that the author asserts from the start that Holmes did not kill nearly as many people as he is credited with, and later casts doubt on the fact that he could be considered a serial killer at all, and that furthermore when he threatens a man who had complained about debris from his building (Holmes had a pistol and a knife!) and was only saved by a policeman that this is "uncharacteristic" of Holmes. By this point in the book no less than five people had been killed by Holmes, and in its broadest definition serial killer denotes someone who kills either for pleasure or financial gain -- clearly Holmes was at least a sociopath, and the fact that he had no compunction about killing children leads one to believe he was no doubt a serial killer for all practical purposes. It seems the author strains mightily to demythologize Holmes to the point of trying to ignore the fact that he was pretty much a monster of sorts. Worth the read for anyone interested in Mudgett aka H.H. Holmes.

This is a great read. I had read enough about Holmes to know that Devil in the White City was greatly embellished (it's a great story, nonetheless), and then when Adam mentioned this book while my wife and I were taking one of his tours (the history of Graceland Cemetary - check it and his other tours out on his website Mysterious Chicago), I ordered it right away.It was fascinating to learn the real history of such a notorious figure, and how the legend of HH Holmes grew over the decades. This book also shows a fascinating glimpse of how journalism and police work was in the late 19th century. I highly recommend this book.

Extremely dry. Though this book is full of information regarding the life of the notorious H. H. Holmes, it is very boring and after struggling through half of it I lost interest entirety. It is straight forward and fact based, which is good for content but it was so dully presented as to be unreadable. It would be more suitable for reference material than entertainment.

A boring collection of essentially footnotes. There is no flow or continuity or literary arc. Just a recitation of one-line newspaper accounts that may or may not be true. A good editor might have been able to rescue this mess but in its present form it is nigh well unreadable. A waste of time.

Probably the best book out there on H. H. Holmes. Adam Selzer cut through all the malarkey and gets the true story out in a sensible way. I truly enjoyed reading it and am reading it a second time so I did not miss something.

Many hours of tedious research must have gone into this book, but I found it a very slow and tedious read. I bought this book after reading Devil in White City and was anxious to read it over Spring break to learn more about H.H. Holmes. I couldn't stop reading DIWC. I had to keep putting Selzer's book down - too dull for me.

Well written but a long and tedious read. If you really analyze, only about 75% is really related to the actual killings. The rest is filler, in my opinion.If you have insomnia and need to nod off....this is the book. Lots of detail and characters. Be prepared. You will end up knowing a lot more than you probably wanted to.

Selzer does a good job of laying out a timeline and the facts. So if you're looking for that, you'll find it here. Where the book came up short for me was in the narrative. It became tedious pretty quickly, especially if you've read on Holmes' story in the past. This book would be a good primer for anyone looking for an expository on the details and timeline, as opposed to all that but in a more narrative form such as Devil in the White City.

The 1,000 Spanish words audiobook is helping me to learn a lot of vocabulary words. The 99 Spanish conversations is also improving my vocabulary while improving my listening comprehension in Spanish. The 150 Spanish idioms is probably more for entertainment. I doubt that I will ever use these Spanish expressions but it is still great to know and understand them in case I ever hear a Spanish speaker say them.I don't think I'll be using what I am learning in the Romantic Spanish Words and Phrases audiobook. LOL. But still very fun to listen to. But I must say that I am really enjoying the Spanish blunders audiobook. I wish it was longer. The Spanish blunders audiobook is too short and left me wanting to hear more because it was so helpful in teaching me to avoid lots of Spanish mistakes that English speakers commonly make when speaking Spanish.Considering what I paid for the 9 audible books, I must say that I got my money's worth. By the way, I also have Patrick Jackson's Learn Beginner Spanish Bundle and I will say that this 3 in 1 audiobook (actually 9 in 1 audiobook) and Patrick Jackson's Learn Beginner Spanish Bundle work hand in hand.

Although the first book in this bundle is a book for learning Spanish words and phrases, in other words, a vocabulary builder, it's better than all or the majority of the other products I have bought that teach Spanish vocabulary words and phrases. What separates this one from the others is that not only is there a pause to repeat the Spanish word but there is also a pause to repeat the Spanish phrase.To most this probably sounds like a very small feature or a minor distinction from the other Spanish vocabulary audiobooks which do not have those pauses. But these small differences are helping me to correct my pronunciation in Spanish and make my Latin American Spanish accent sound so much better. The 99 Conversations Spanish audios and the Spanish idioms audios are extra-value-added bonuses for me. I'd be 100% satisfied with this audiobook even if it didn't include anything more than the 1,000 Spanish words and phrases audiobook.

I am very impressed with this audiobook. There is more than enough content to keep you busy for a while. In fact there are over 15 hours of recorded Spanish lessons, covering everything from the 1,000 most common Spanish words and phrases, 99 actual Spanish conversations, common Spanish expressions and sayings, Romantic words and phrases in Spanish. There are even tips on how to avoid common Spanish blunders. One thing that really stands out is that it has helped me with my pronunciation in Spanish.

The audiobook is a steal. Or as one would say in Spanish "un robo" (a steal) LOL. And I say that because there are so many audiobooks included. I really feel that I got my money's worth. Actually Iím still getting my money's worth since it will take me weeks or even months to finish all of these audiobooks. There is even a PDF (transcript) thatís included with the audiobook.
