Review

Loxton and Prothero have written what may well be the most important work to date on cryptozoology, taking its rightful place in the annals of skeptical literature in particular and scientific literature in general. Abominable Science! is the defining work on cryptozoology of our generation. (from the foreword by Michael Shermer, author of The Believing Brain: From Ghosts and Gods to Politics and Conspiracies)Here, at last, is a scholarly, fully referenced work that presents a thoroughly reasonable, well-argued, skeptical perspective on some of the most iconic 'cryptids,' and it is fun to read and well illustrated to boot. Combining excellent and thorough research, ample references to the cryptozoological literature, and, most important, an appropriately level-headed, critical approach, Abominable Science! offers a novel, refreshing exploration of the world of cryptozoology. (Darren Naish, National Oceanography Centre, University of Southampton)Nearly everyone―scientist and layman alike―would love the Loch Ness monster and other 'cryptids' to be real. Daniel Loxton and Donald R. Prothero, in their riveting exploration of cryptozoology, readily admit that some species (such as the living coelacanth and even the mountain gorilla) remained hidden to human experience until relatively recently. Yet they insist on hard evidence, thus running counter to the preferences of those who prefer to believe. Abominable Science! is a well-told, engaging story of skepticism. Loxton and Prothero present a lucid and compelling case to counter the false claims of cryptozoology. (Niles Eldredge, American Museum of Natural History, author of Darwin: Discovering the Tree of Life)[Abominable Science!] is as valuable for its analysis of the hunted as it is for the light it shines on the still-hopeful hunters. (Publishers Weekly)Highly recommended for readers looking for scientific but accessible evaluations of the existence of five notable cryptids that have captured our imaginations. Likely to be popular. (Library Journal (starred review))Groundbreaking.... A must-have. There is nothing else like it. (Sharon Hill Doubtful News)[Loxton and Prothero] offer us a sharp analysis of the quest for unreal critters―cryptids, as they are called―and the people who pursue them, shining an arc light onto the hoaxes and faked photos, the made-up films, faux corpses, delusions, lies and plain bad science that plague the field.... [An] entertaining and thoroughly documented book. (Margaret Wertheim Wall Street Journal)The authors, eminent and intrepid sceptics, seek evidence of fabulous big beasts and find nothing but fakes, folklore, pseudo-science and anecdote. (Iain Finlayson The Times (London))[Abominable Science!] is a never less than rigorous examination of the evidence, and a cultural history of cryptozoology. (Daniel Cressey Nature)A good hard look at cryptozoology.... Loxton and Prothero lay bare the psychological roots of why such mythical creatures exist in our own minds. (The Scientist)

I've been waiting for a good skeptical book on this subject for a while. When I was a kid, my family watched the TV show "In Search Of" which occasionally included segments on Bigfoot, the Yeti and the Loch Ness Monster. My older sister was really into things like this and had many books on theses subjects which I also read. It was much easier to believe these things back then before many decades goes by of continual searching and still hasn't turned up any more evidence of these cryptic animals. I was a Biology major in college studying Ecology, Mammalogy etc. During these classes I learned a lot of the natural laws by which living populations of animals live. One night my father and I started a conversation about Bigfoot after watching a Bigfoot show on TV about. Then I started bringing up things like habitat size, minimum population sizes, the lack of fossil evidence etc. By the end of the conversation, both my father and I were complete skeptics. My Dad even stated how fun it was to go through that process. This book covers a lot of the same things that we discussed that night and much more. My only complaint is that the chapter on the sea serpent was way too long. It didn't help that I am least interested in that one as well. This is totally worth it for the others though. Also, the authors went out of their way to be fair and respectful to the true believers, even going so far as to admit that some of these cryptic animals might exist, we just don't have good evidence that they do yet.

Since childhood I have been fascinated by the idea of animals existing that are disputed by science. I haunted the library, reading anything on the Loch Ness monster or sasquatch I could find. Anything along those lines. When younger, I was much more accepting and open to the possible reality of such animals. I was a firm believer. In some ways it has always hurt me a little when science has made the possibility of such creatures less possible, such as when studies of the Scottish lake prove that there simply isn't enough protein available in the food chain to support a population of large predators. Every time a hoax was uncovered too, my faith diminished. While I still want to believe, I am less able to. This is exactly what happened to one of the coauthors of this book. This book moves my thinking much further toward accepting my skepticism. The authors look at the major cryptozological enigmas of our time and break them down scientifically, historically and psychologically. While this book does fall in the skeptical camp on the issue, it is fair and a needed book on the subject. If I may recommend another book in a review for this one, immediately after this, move on to "The Demon-Haunted World" by Carl Sagan for a similar treatment of the U.F.O. phenomenon and crop circles.

I am a huge fan of cryptozoology (albeit a skeptical one) and I heard the Monstertalk podcast where the authors were interviewed and I knew I had to buy the book.Excellent coverage for the big cryptids and excellent well researched information. My only complaint is that the coverage is limited to the bigger more well known cryptids (the title says "famous cryptids" so no major surprises) but for those covered this book does a fine job. I would have loved a chupacabra chapter but Ben Radford's excellent book about nailed that coffin tighter than a Yeti's grip. For those getting into monsters this is awesome resource. My only regret: I wish I had gotten the physical version but I am stationed overseas and I didn't want to wait for the book. I love Mr. Loxton's artwork and I feel like I am missing out on my little Kindle.

I really enjoyed this book. It is a nice, easy read on the topic of fantastic creatures that are maybe just too fantastic to be true. The authors take the reader through the skeptical processes of these creatures. We wish they were true, and we've looked for them for years. So why can't we find them? Loxton and Prothero explain the scientific concepts of proof and what is needed for the skeptic to believe in these creatures. It is also a great read for those that may be too accepting of fantastic tales and need a little bit of education on how to think critically about these animals possible existence. This book is suitable for ages 13 and up, or maybe for an advanced reader of a younger age.

Daniel Loxton and Donald Prothero deftly take on some of the biggest monsters and claims in this well-written book. They clearly and patiently detail why it is highly unlikely that famous cryptids exist. Further, they discuss why people might be compelled to believe in the existence of the Loch Ness monster, the Yeti, Bigfoot, and others. And most important, they outline why it is necessary for citizens to understand how science operates and the dangers of scientific illiteracy.

This should be considered the first reference for those wanting to know the truth about proposed mythical creatures. It is written in an elegant style by two respected professionals. The fine paper stock used makes this a book you will want to keep in your archives. Don't be fooled by the carnival-arcade cover. This is a serious, academic work.
