From the Inside Flap

It is a cold, hard fact of business life that most startups fail. Even many of those entrepreneurs who ultimately succeed have stories of personal challenges, unsuccessful companies, and difficulties along the way. The founders of TechStars, a mentorship-driven startup accelerator, have worked with entrepreneurs and companies over the past twenty-five years, and have seen a number of the same issues come up again and again. In Do More Faster, the founders of TechStars identify the key issues that first-time entrepreneurs encounter, and offer proven advice from successful entrepreneurs who have worked with the TechStars program. The authors organize the most critical issues into seven themes: Idea and Vision, People, Execution, Product, Fundraising, Legal and Structure, and Work and Life Balance. Many of the examples are personal experiences from the entrepreneurs themselves, integrated into a cohesive narrative—while at the same time able to stand on their own. Throughout the book, they debunk numerous myths about startups and reveal some surprising truths. They explain, for instance, that the core of a startup is not always a world-changing and earth-shattering idea—in fact, it is often the case that successful startups started out doing something else. They also underscore the efficiency of execution: great entrepreneurs know how to synthesize data, make a decision about the path they are going down, and execute. And they offer some alternatives to traditional ways of raising money, while stressing that you shouldn't start with the assumption that you need to raise money. Mastering the seven themes may not ensure success, but understanding the issues, reading the stories, and getting advice pertaining to these issues will increase your chances dramatically. And if nothing else, you'll realize that you aren't alone in facing these challenges.

I read a lot of business books and have been involved in multiple successful startups over the past several decades, among them tech as well as creative sector/arts nonprofits. Do More Faster is or can be a quick read, but if your experience is similar to mine you'll find yourself wanting to loop back and dig into some of the topics more than once. The book very clearly and understandably linked to TechStars, a terrific program for identifying, mentoring and helping aspiring tech entrepreneurial teams to rapidly prototype, launch and attract attention and investment from Angels and VCs. However, this book is also very useful for businesses seeking to streamline and accelerate development of new products and business niches. It is practical while also emphasizing some of the key intangibles that startup teams too often push aside. And, while emphasizing practical, real-world requirements, most chapters include additional observations.Highly recommended for industry you may be in and whether or not you are oriented toward the technology sector.

Filled with case studies from TechStars network which is unique and different but not what I was expecting. There is good value there but each new chapter is specific to every new entrepreneurs story so there isn’t necessarily a consistent message going on. Pitch techstars pretty hard. But it’s a worth a read to grow your startup.

You often feel alone as a startup founder. You head out on the journey, maybe with a co-founder, maybe a team, or not, but for the most part the process is heavily focused internally. You don't sleep thinking about what you can do, how to grow, how to increase engagement, revenue - whatever metric or traction is haunting you You drive to work - new thoughts fill your head - "How did I get to work?" It is then that I have had great comfort from Brad and David's book. It is nice to know you aren't the first, there are solutions, and someone to share your pain even if it is through the lines on a book. I have had and continue to get great comfort from this book, and frankly many other books by the authors. I have a list of many, many books I've read prior to launching a startup, and during. This is definitely on my must have list.

Very disappointing. I read this for presentation to a small peer group of entrepreneurs and was not impressed. The two page summaries from different entrepreneurs could have been interesting but there was so little depth it became trite. For example - the Do or Do Not story was a nice quick little bit about doing things not trying things. Cute semantic description but not much real take away. Will be selling for cheap on eBay.

David Cohen and Brad Feld are geniuses. They each are also kind individuals (each, for example, took the time for a seven page interview with me). This book is chock full of advice that every entrepreneur needs to be successful. If you want to be successful as an entrepreneur, and also want some insight into TechStars and the great success and successful companies it has spawned, read this book.Very highly recommended!!

I bought this book having never heard of the authors or techstars because of the premise alone. As a first time entrepreneur, I am constantly working at how to do more with my time. Ironically, the day after I bought it, I found myself at a pitch event for the book tour pitching my company and getting a free copy. So much for efficiency.Having just completed my read, my first reaction is that I wish I had it a year ago! It is packed with lots of good feedback that help first timers get things off the ground and avoid the typical pitfalls of starting a company. This is particularly true for technical founders of software companies with relatively less business experience. The book also makes me somewhat jealous of the techstars program. We have learned a lot of the same lessons espoused in the program and book, like the value of building a network of advisors, having a co-founder and of developing the voice of the customer...but what makes me jealous is the concentration and rate of activity they can generate within the program relative to the rate of progress you can make coordinating and networking on your own. Your runway available to make things happen is a constant, ominous threat to your endeavor and having a program that can accelerate progress would be a deeply valuable asset.Overall I recommend this book highly, and having now met both of the authors, recommend them both as authentically interested in helping you succeed. And this is not something I can genuinely say of the entire entrepreneurial eco-system.

This is one of the most valuable pieces of literature out there. Brad Feld and David Cohen have gathered the stories and insights of many successful entrepreneurs, most of whom mentor at the TechStars program, to produce a wonderfully segmented book pregnant with the realities of what it takes to build, grow and maintain a startup. They throw clarity on the pitfalls of the journey that any startup will travel, whilst highlighting what a wonderful undertaking the journey itself is. This is clear, concise advice from people that really know what they are talking about. When you are done with it read : Venture Deals: Be Smarter Than Your Lawyer and Venture Capitalist by Brad Feld, Jason Mendelson and Dick Costolo. It's another cannon of a book. A must read if you are thinking about going for venture financing.
